FLYING HIGH

Commercial aircraft tend to fly at altitudes between 8 and 10 kilometres above the sea level, depending on the the size of the aircraft and the weather conditions.  

Why do they fly so high up in the air?  Surely it must be a waste of fuel going up so high, only to come down again?
