Towel Ring

I spent two years of staring at this whilst about my morning ablutions.

FInally my brain kicked into action one morning and realised it was worth a photograph!

What interested me was the strange reflection cast onto the wall on top of the shadow.

First, how can there be a shadow and a reflection in the same place?

Secondly, why this strange shape?
